History of Bukang Liwayway
The Bukang Liwayway Dawn for the Poor Foundation, Inc.’s story begins in 1996 as Patrick Hobbs, a Canadian man driven by faith and love for sharing the Word to the marginalized, arrived in the Philippines and chose to live among the slum area of Welfareville, Mandaluyong. His humble presence opened doors to genuine relationships, built on trust and shared stories. As he immersed himself in the community, Patrick shared his testimony of Christ, revealing his mission as His disciple and inspiring others through love and service.
Supported by organizations such as the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF), and other international supporters, Patrick’s efforts turned into a structured community development initiative. In 1997, he launched the “Jordan Project” in Welfareville which is a comprehensive program aimed at uplifting the community through scholarships, livelihood opportunities, and ministry outreach. This marked the beginning of Bukang Liwayway’s (BL) commitment to holistic development.
From 1996 to 2000, the program expanded its reach, partnering with local churches to make disciples among the poor across four cities and several barangays, including Cogeo in Antipolo. This period laid the groundwork for a movement rooted in community transformation and spiritual growth.
In 2001, Bukang Liwayway transitioned into the Holistic Church Multiplication Movement (HCMM), focusing on planting churches and nurturing spiritual leaders across more barangays and cities. In 2002, the organization’s reach extended further with new work in Calapan, Marilao, Malabon, and Balic Balic Manila, introducing community-based programs such as preschool education, livelihood projects like card-making and cross-stitch, and youth development initiatives.
The early 2000s saw the establishment of vital institutions like the Jordan Child Development Center in Welfareville and the registration of Bukang Liwayway with the Social Security System, affirming its commitment to sustainable service. Leaders such as Fred Dunggannon, Mimi Dungganon, who are former scholars of BL, and Danny Edrad took on pivotal roles, steering the movement towards greater impact.
From 2005 onwards, Bukang Liwayway’s efforts flourished as it reached more communities namely Pandacan in Manila, Trece Martires in Cavite, Marilao in Bulacan, and beyond. The organization’s holistic approach grew to include medical missions, school sponsorships, and church planting, culminating in the flourishing of over 111 house churches by 2016. In the same year the organization celebrated its 20th anniversary, a testament to resilience and unwavering faith.
Throughout its journey, Bukang Liwayway continued to innovate and expand. In 2017, it humbly became a member of the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches, and by 2019, it had ventured into Tanay, Rizal. The milestone of its 25th anniversary in 2021 marked a significant chapter with the launch of new ministries in Marikina. In the year after, 2022, the work in Rosario, Cavite started.
Most recently, in 2023, the outreach in Bulalacao, Mindoro was established and in 2024, Bukang Liwayway received licensing and registration from DSWD, solidifying its community service foundation. Its latest endeavors include transformation of programs like Tupang Ligaw into Kabisig, emphasizing unity and men’s ministry.
Currently, Bukang Liwayway stands as a beacon of hope, continuing to serve, disciple, and uplift communities through love, faith, and dedicated service with 11 communities: Mandaluyong, Manila, Kamandag-Antipolo, Padilla-Antipolo, Calapan, Bulalacao, TreceMartires Cavite, Rosario Cavite ,Marilao, Marikina, Tanay.
